Music Ministry

All members and friends of Saint John the Evangelist Parish are invited to participate in our music ministry as choir members or cantors. Every voice is essential to our celebrations of the Mass!

Please contact Mike Sowa, Director of Music and Liturgy, at the parish office (570-654-0053) for more information on how you can lend your talents.

Our parish choir begins rehearsing in the fall for special liturgies and celebrations throughout the liturgical year. These include All Souls’ Day, Christmas, the Easter Triduum, the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation, and any other special observances or feasts that may occur. Rehearsals are held according to the schedule on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. in the Pastoral Center, unless otherwise noted.

If you have an interest in serving as a cantor in our parish, please contact Mike Sowa at the parish office to further discuss how and when you can help us! Cantors are given a list of the selected hymns for liturgies in advance.

The pipe organ in our church was originally built by George Kilgen and Son of Saint Louis, Missouri, as Opus 4566. It was installed in our church during the summer of 1930. It is the same vintage and built by the same company as the instruments in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, New York City. The pipe organ was a gift to the parish by Monsignor Peter Winters. Around 1969, the instrument was restored and a celebratory recital was played by local organist Dr. Clifford Balshaw. In 1983, substantial changes were made to the tonal design of the organ, including the addition of a number of pipe ranks. The next refurbishment of the organ took place in 2020, alongside the interior restoration of the church building. The Trumpet of the Choir division was mounted horizontally as a Trumpet en chamade and renamed the “Evangelist Trumpet” after the patron saint of our parish. The rededication recital that followed this series of improvements to the organ was performed by Canon Mark Laubach on October 24, 2021. Additional upgrades and refinements are planned for the instrument in Summer 2022. We have chosen Kehoe & Company, LLC of Croydon, PA as the curator of our spectacular instrument.

A new baby grand piano by Pearl River was placed in the sanctuary in 2015 and made possible through the donations of several generous benefactors. The piano has been used throughout the past several years at certain Masses and during concerts and performances. There is also a Rodgers electronic organ in our lower level chapel.
