Music Ministry

Parish Choir

Our parish choir meets seasonally, as scheduled, on Tuesdays at 6:00 PM in the Msgr. Bendik Pastoral Center auditorium, around the piano.  We are gladly welcoming new members to our choir - teens through adults!  There are often opportunities during the year for us to sing together with the choir of St. Joseph Marello Parish in both liturgical celebrations and concerts.  Examples of celebrations for which the choir sings at St. John the Evangelist are Christmas Eve, the Easter Triduum, and the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation.  The choir will also sing at various Sunday 11:30 AM Masses throughout the year.

Rehearsals for Christmas 2024 will be held at the following times:

Tuesday, December 3 - 6:00 PM

Tuesday, December 10 - 6:00 PM

Wednesday, December 18 - 5:00 PM

The choir will sing for the 10:00 PM Mass on Christmas Eve, with carols being sung while our parishioners and friends arrive for Mass.

Our parish also invites children who have a love for singing to join us during the annual Christmas Eve pageant, Mass on Easter Sunday, and Sunday morning children's liturgies during the year.  Rehearsal times are announced in advance of each celebration.

Cantors

For more information on serving as a cantor, please contact Michael Sowa at the parish office.

Do You Play an Instrument?

If you play an instrument and would like to share your talents in playing along with the organ or piano during our Masses, especially on major feast days or holy days, please call Michael Sowa at the parish office.  Music scores will be provided.

Concerts in Our Parishes

Together with St. Joseph Marello Parish, St. John the Evangelist hosts several concerts throughout the year.  Recently, we have been very privileged to host artists and groups such as the Marywood University Chamber Singers, the St. Thomas Gospel Choir of Philadelphia, the Beverley classical music trio, concert organists Mark Laubach and Greg Zelek, and liturgical composers Sarah Hart and Dan Schutte.  Cantores Christi Regis, the choir of King's College in Wilkes-Barre, comes to our parishes to present Lenten Taizé prayer services each year.  The annual Independence Day concert is an event when members of our parishes' music ministries participate with musicians from our community.  A special musical event is held each year to celebrate the Christmas season.  Please be sure to check our latest announcements regarding upcoming concerts!

Liturgical music at St. John the Evangelist is under the direction of Michael Sowa:
